Justin's Heart Update 2005

Dear Family and Friends,

We have so much for which to be thankful. We are truly blessed and are enjoying the peace of wonderful health in our family. Justin has had a very good winter this year (knock on wood!). He has had a runny nose a few times that lasted a normal week or so, but nothing like the recurring cough he had last year (yippee!). He even managed to avoid getting the cough that I had for a good six weeks starting in November.

It is wonderful not to be constantly worrying about Justin. His color is good and his energy level is out the roof! He is definitely living a very normal and active life. We are looking forward to his birthday coming up on April 2…FIVE years old…where has the time gone? He will be grown before we know it!

This year has been so much fun (despite a healthy four-year-old attitude that we’ve battled for nearly a year). Justin is doing so much and is so sociable with anyone and everyone. He is enjoying park days and field trips with his school group, and he is working through kindergarten-level phonics and math workbooks. This fall we will begin “official” schooling, and we are all excited about the activities to come.

Justin’s BIG NEWS this year is the arrival of his baby sister on December 12!! Michaela arrived on a Sunday, just like Justin did, and he was able to meet her in the recovery room within the first hour of her birth. He grinned the entire time he was in there and said over and over “She’s SO CUTE!” and asked everyone “She’s too cute, isn’t she?”….he is the happiest, proudest big brother ever to be seen! That evening as we looked in the nursery window at her, he said “I could look at her FOREVER!”…oh, to melt a mother’s heart!

While everyone expects the newness and excitement to wear off (and I’m sure it will eventually, particularly when this cute baby is mobile and into his things!), it hasn’t yet! He LOVES to “pet” her head, show her his things, and see her dirty diapers…when someone said that they were ready to take Michaela home with them, Justin got very upset and said “NO, she’s OUR baby! She’s coming home with us!”

We will be calling soon to schedule Justin’s cardiologist visit for this summer. It should be fairly routine and will not even include an echocardiogram this year. For once, we are looking ahead to a visit and expecting only good news. Worst case this time is that they would want to start talking about closing the hole between his two upper chambers, but that shouldn’t be until 2006 at the earliest.

Thanks to everyone for continued prayers and thoughts as we enjoy a good year.

Much love,
Toby, Sharon, Justin, and Michaela Dunn
